AHIMA Professional Practice Experience Workbook

Exercise 62 ROI Deny

CIOX e-SmartLog will be sunset from AHIMA VLab on June 1, 2020. Background: Often, an alert is placed by a patient or a healthcare entity in the eSmartlog system to alert the Correspondence staff to not release PHI until approved by the appropriate authority or patient. Reasons for patient ROI Deny alerts may include genetic testing results or sensitive procedures which the patient wishes to keep confidential. A healthcare entity may place a ROI Deny alert on records for several reasons including cases where releasing the record would be detrimental to the patient. There are two types of ROI denials in CIOX: ROI Deny for Patients and ROI Deny for Requesters. ROI Deny for Patients is for those patients who request to block the release of their protected health information. If a user enters information into the New Request screen for a patient whose protected health information is blocked from release, a warning message appears, informing the user that the patient does not allow his or her protected health information to be released. The ROI Deny for Requesters feature is used by facilities who want to block the release of information to certain requesters. If a user enters information into the New Request screen for a requester who is flagged for ROI deny, a message screen opens. • Select New ROI Deny for Patient. • Enter your name for the patient’s first name and last name and enter in your AHIMA ID for your MRN. • Record the MRN. • Return to Main Menu and enter a New Requester using any Name, Address and Requester Type. Demonstrate how the flag works • On the eSmartlog New Request page, enter your name and the MRN you used to set the ROI Deny. • Submit a screenshot of this warning to your instructor as directed.
